Wilderness Finding a true wilderness is a rare an beautiful thing. Let me start with the definition of a wilderness area. This is a vast area of natural indigenous vegetation, with all its wildlife and geological landscapes totally in tact—undeveloped by human hand. A place where man visits but does not live. A virgin area untouched by the greed and total consumption of our so-called modern and “civilized” society. An area with no man-made structures at all. Only with the calls of the wild, the birds singing, the wind blowing, the rivers flowing; a place where nature follows ancient rules. There is harmony and total beauty. Yes indeed, a spiritual place. A place where we can truly find peace. A place for our souls and reflections of our lives. Man is but a visitor here. He comes to these places in times of need, to get back to his true self, to evolve and energise. This is a place where you can feel isolated from the rush of our crazy world. This is where we can truly be civilized. For in out “modern” world, true happiness is hard to find. As the Earth’s population continues to increase at an uncontrolled rate, more and more land and resources are needed for our expanding masses. Surely the biggest threat to our wildlife and natural areas is over-population. With time, these areas will become more and more sought after and if we don’t take steps now to conserve and preserve these valuable gems, there will be nothing left for future generations. With the wilderness gone, humanity can never be whole and complete. In our larger game and nature reserves, where possible, we must try to zone and protect areas of wilderness, as purely wilderness areas. These areas can be well-suited to a primitive or confined type of outdoor recreation. To those who enter these places will provide inspiration, providing the experience of isolation from the outside world . It should be aimed at providing both physical and spiritual recreation. Once you have experienced “wilderness”, you will know deep inside what I mean. For those of us who can, we must do what is possible to protect these areas, for the good of humanity.
