Selecting your land |
|
Factors to consider when purchasing your land Many important factors need to be looked at when buying a farm. Size of property, price, habitat type and preferred area, desired species, distant from towns and cities, rainfall, security, noise and light pollution, access, history of farm, possible future expansions, etc. are but a few of the many points to consider. Much is dependent on your objectives and budget. Choosing the correct habitat type is important as each "veld type" will have different vegetation and therefore different niches for different game species. Rainfall, soil and veld type are some of the main factors that determine the carrying capacity of animals to ensure you maintain a delicate and healthy balance. For instance, elephant and lion require fairly large areas of land to be able to survive in a natural state. If you just want a few antelope species far less land would be required. Overstocking and incorrect species selection and composition can lead to habitat degradation and damage. Additional factors need to be taken into account such as possible damage to land, amount of infrastructure already present and availability of water. You may also want to consider factors like scenic beauty and distance from airports for example, if you would like to develop a tourist or travel focused business. On the other hand some may want their ranch to be in a very remote area away from everything.
